How to Write Scripts for AI Cold Calling That Actually Convert
## The Script Is Everything
Your AI caller is only as good as the script you give it. A great platform with a bad script produces bad results. A decent platform with a great script produces great results. If you invest time in one thing, make it the script.
The Framework: OQOC
Every effective AI cold calling script follows four stages: Open, Qualify, Overcome, Close. Each stage has specific goals and techniques.
Stage 1: Open (First 15 Seconds)
You have 15 seconds before the prospect decides to hang up or listen. The opening must accomplish three things: identify who you are, state why you are calling, and give them a reason to stay on the line.
Template: "Hi [Name], this is [AI Name] from [Company]. I am reaching out because we help [prospect's industry] teams [specific benefit]. Do you have a quick moment?"
Bad opening: "Hi, I am calling from TechCorp. We offer an AI-powered sales automation platform with features including..." Nobody cares about your features in the first 15 seconds.
Good opening: "Hi Sarah, this is Alex from UnlockMyLead. We help real estate teams follow up on every single lead within 60 seconds using AI. Is that something your team struggles with?"
The good opening names a specific pain point and asks a question that invites engagement.
Stage 2: Qualify (30-60 Seconds)
Once the prospect is engaged, ask 2-3 questions that determine if they are a good fit. Keep questions short and conversational.
Qualifying questions by industry: For SaaS: "How large is your current outbound team?" and "What tools are you using for outbound today?" For real estate: "How many leads are you getting per month?" and "How quickly does your team follow up on new leads?" For agencies: "How many clients are you managing outbound for?" and "Are you currently offering AI or automation services?"
Do not ask more than 3 questions. Each additional question increases the chance the prospect ends the call.
Stage 3: Overcome (As Needed)
Objections will come up. Your script should have pre-written responses for the 10 most common objections in your industry. Write 2-3 variations for each so the AI does not repeat the exact same response if the prospect objects multiple times.
Structure each objection response as: Acknowledge, Address, Ask. "I understand [acknowledge]. The reason many teams still find value is [address]. Would it make sense to [ask a question or suggest next step]?"
Stage 4: Close (15 Seconds)
When the prospect shows interest, move immediately to booking. Do not keep talking about features. Offer specific times rather than open-ended questions.
Bad close: "Would you like to schedule a call sometime?" This puts the work on the prospect and they say no.
Good close: "I would love to show you a quick demo. Would Tuesday at 2 PM or Wednesday at 10 AM work better for you?" Binary choices get more yes responses.
Script Writing Rules for AI
Rule 1: Write how people talk, not how people write. Use contractions. Use short sentences. Avoid formal language.
Rule 2: Keep each AI response under 30 words. Long monologues cause prospects to zone out.
Rule 3: End every response with a question. Questions keep the conversation moving forward and prevent awkward silences.
Rule 4: Include explicit fallback instructions. "If the prospect asks something you do not know, say: That is a great question. I will have our team get back to you with the exact details."
Rule 5: Test with real calls and iterate. Your first script will not be your best. Listen to recordings, note where prospects disengage, and rewrite those sections.
